Essential Oils and Aromatherapy in Labor

Essential oils have been used for centuries for a variety of purposes, from promoting relaxation to alleviating physical discomfort. When used correctly, they can be a powerful tool during labor. They are one of my favorite tools to use in labor as they have so many different uses! The essential oils mentioned in this post are generally considered safe for use in labor, but it’s always important to consult with your care provider to ensure they are appropriate for your specific situation.



How to Use Essential Oils in Labor

When most people think of using essential oils, they picture a diffuser gently dispersing aromas into the air. However, diffusers aren’t my favorite option for labor for a couple of reasons. First, many hospitals don’t allow diffusers in their rooms. Second, once the aroma is in the air, it can be difficult to eliminate if the laboring mother suddenly finds the smell irritating.

Fortunately, there are other effective ways to use essential oils in labor:

  • Essential Oil Jewelry: This includes necklaces, bracelets, or other accessories designed to hold a small amount of essential oil. These pieces allow the laboring mother to keep the soothing scent close by and can be easily removed if the aroma becomes overwhelming.

  • Cotton Pads: Place a few drops of essential oil on a cotton pad and position it near the laboring mother. This method provides the benefits of aromatherapy while allowing the scent to be quickly removed if needed.

  • Massage with Carrier Oil: Combine a few drops of essential oil with a carrier oil, such as coconut or jojoba oil, and use it for massage. This method not only provides the benefits of aromatherapy but also helps relieve muscle tension and discomfort. Remember never to apply essential oils directly to the skin as they can cause irritation.

Which Essential Oils to use During Labor

Lavender: Lavender is one of the most popular essential oils and for good reason. It promotes relaxation and helps alleviate stress, which can be critical in breaking the fear-pain-tension cycle during labor. Stress and tension can slow labor progress, so lavender may be a powerful tool if you find yourself feeling overwhelmed. However, try to avoid using lavender too early in labor, as it might slow things down. When diluted with a carrier oil, lavender is excellent for relieving muscle tension through massage.


Eucalyptus: Eucalyptus oil is another great option for massage. It has pain-relieving properties that can provide comfort during labor.

Geranium: Geranium oil not only helps with pain relief but also creates a calming and peaceful environment. This can be particularly helpful for maintaining a positive mental state during labor.


Peppermint: Peppermint oil is a versatile option during labor. It’s great for providing a quick burst of energy and alleviating nausea, a common issue in labor. Another unique use for peppermint oil is placing a few drops in the toilet if you’re having difficulty urinating—a surprisingly effective trick.


Lemon: Lemon oil is another energizing option that also combats nausea. Its fresh scent can provide a much-needed lift during intense moments.


Orange: Orange oil has analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties, which can help reduce the sensations of pain. Its uplifting aroma can also promote a sense of well-being.


Clary Sage: Clary Sage is one of my favorites for labor. It is known to stimulate the uterus and strengthen contractions, making it especially useful for encouraging labor progression. Additionally, it lowers cortisol levels and promotes a positive mindset—qualities that make it an invaluable tool during childbirth.


Final Thoughts

Essential oils can be a wonderful addition to your labor toolkit, offering both physical relief and emotional support. Whether you choose to wear essential oil jewelry, use cotton pads, or incorporate them into a massage, the key is to use them safely and mindfully. Always remember to consult with your care provider before using any essential oils to ensure they’re right for you. With the right approach, essential oils can help create a more comfortable and empowering birth experience.
